A real-time transportation visibility platform (RTTVP) aggregates live location and status data from carriers, telematics, and ports across all modes to show where every shipment is and predict when it will actually arrive.
In Practice
Platforms such as project44 and FourKites connect to thousands of carriers' ELDs, ocean AIS feeds, rail and air data, then apply machine learning to produce predictive ETAs that account for traffic, dwell, and remaining stops. The shipper sees one map and one data feed instead of thirty carrier portals.
Day to day, the predictive ETA is the product: warehouses schedule dock doors against real arrival times, customer service answers 'where is my order?' without phone calls, and planners learn about a slipping container while there is still time to react. Detention disputes get settled with timestamped facts.
Example: a manufacturer's RTTVP shows an inbound truckload running four hours late; the receiving team reassigns the dock appointment and pulls the next trailer forward, keeping the unloading crew productive instead of idle.
