Definition
A supply chain control tower is a centralized dashboard and decision hub that pulls data from many systems to give end-to-end visibility of orders, inventory, and shipments, with alerts and workflows for exceptions.
In Practice
A control tower aggregates signals from ERP, WMS, TMS, suppliers, and carriers into one operational picture, then applies rules or AI to flag exceptions: a delayed vessel, a PO that will short a production line, a DC trending toward a stockout. The best ones go beyond alerts to recommend and orchestrate responses.
For practitioners, the value is triage. Instead of twelve tabs and morning calls to find out what broke overnight, the tower ranks issues by business impact — revenue at risk, customers affected — so the team works the right problems first.
Example: a CPG company's control tower detects that a container carrying a promotional SKU will miss its DC arrival by five days; it flags affected customer orders, proposes covering from another region's stock, and tracks the recovery to closure.
