Definition
A Transportation Management System (TMS) is software for planning, executing, and auditing freight movements — selecting carriers and modes, building loads, tendering shipments, tracking them, and paying the bills.
In Practice
A TMS takes orders that need to ship and turns them into optimized loads: it consolidates orders, picks the cheapest compliant mode and carrier from contracted rates, tenders electronically, and tracks the shipment through delivery. On the back end it audits carrier invoices against the rated cost, catching billing errors automatically.
For planners and logistics analysts, the TMS is the system of record for freight spend. Its optimization engine is where consolidation savings actually happen — combining three LTL shipments into one multi-stop truckload can cut cost per unit by double digits.
Example: a consumer goods shipper routes 400 orders a day through Oracle TMS or Uber Freight's platform; the system builds full truckloads for lanes with volume, sends the remainder LTL or parcel, and feeds tracking events to customer service.
