Telematics
Definition
Telematics combines GPS, onboard sensors, and cellular communication in vehicles to transmit location, speed, engine data, driver behavior, and trailer conditions back to fleet management systems.
In Practice
A telematics unit plugs into a truck's diagnostics port or is built into the trailer, streaming position pings, fuel burn, harsh-braking events, idle time, door openings, and reefer temperatures. Fleet software turns this into live maps, driver scorecards, maintenance alerts, and regulatory records like electronic logging device (ELD) hours-of-service data.
For transportation teams, telematics is the raw feed behind accurate ETAs and honest carrier scorecards, and for private fleets it drives cost directly: idle-time coaching and route discipline commonly cut fuel spend measurably, while fault-code alerts prevent roadside breakdowns that blow delivery windows.
Example: a private fleet's telematics flags a truck whose coolant temperature is trending high; maintenance swaps it at the depot that night, avoiding a breakdown that would have stranded 22 store deliveries the next morning.
