Definition
The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to networks of connected sensors and devices — on trucks, containers, pallets, machines, and shelves — that continuously report location, condition, and status data.
In Practice
IoT devices give the supply chain a nervous system. GPS trackers report where a container is, temperature loggers report whether vaccines stayed cold, vibration sensors report whether a conveyor motor is about to fail. The data streams into visibility platforms and analytics tools instead of waiting for someone to check.
For planners and logistics teams, IoT converts arguments into facts. A rejected load of frozen food is no longer a dispute — the sensor trace shows exactly when and where the reefer failed. Condition monitoring also enables intervention in transit: reroute, re-ice, or resell before product is lost.
Example: a pharma shipper puts cellular temperature-and-location sensors in every cold chain shipment; when a pallet sits on a hot tarmac past its threshold, the team gets an alert and diverts replacement stock before the customer ever knows.
