Supply Chain Risk Management
Definition
Supply chain risk management is the systematic identification, assessment, and mitigation of events that could disrupt supply, demand, or operations, ranging from supplier bankruptcies to cyberattacks and geopolitical shocks.

The discipline follows a repeatable loop: identify risks across suppliers, logistics lanes, facilities, and demand; assess each for probability and impact, often using time-to-recover and value-at-risk; mitigate the priority items through dual sourcing, buffers, contracts, or insurance; and monitor continuously so early warnings trigger prepared responses rather than improvisation.
For planners, risk management shows up in concrete choices: qualifying a second source for a sole-supplied resin, holding extra weeks of stock on parts with long requalification times, or writing contracts with capacity reservations. The discipline is deciding which risks justify these costs, because protecting everything is unaffordable.
A useful distinction is between recurrent risks, such as demand variability and late deliveries, which are managed with safety stock and service metrics, and disruptive risks, such as a factory fire, which need contingency plans. The 2012 fire at a single nylon-12 plant that halted global auto production remains the cautionary tale for unmapped tier-2 dependencies.
