Supply Chain Network Design

Definition

Supply chain network design is the strategic process of deciding the number, location, size, and role of facilities such as plants, warehouses, and cross-docks, and how product flows between them. It sets the structural cost and service capabilities of the chain.

In Practice

Network design answers questions like: how many distribution centers do we need, where should they be, which plants serve which markets, and which customers ship from which site? These decisions lock in a large share of total supply chain cost, including freight, facility, labor, inventory, and duty costs, and they define what delivery speed is even possible.

The core trade-off is consolidation versus proximity. Fewer, larger facilities lower fixed costs and pool inventory, but push products farther from customers, raising outbound freight and transit times. More facilities do the reverse. Optimization models weigh these against demand density, service targets, and risk.

A retailer promising two-day delivery nationwide from a single midwest DC may find it cheaper overall to open two more DCs on the coasts: outbound parcel zones drop sharply, offsetting the added fixed cost. Companies typically revisit network design every few years or after major demand shifts.
