Supply Chain Visibility
Definition
Supply chain visibility is the ability to track materials, orders, shipments, and inventory across the end-to-end chain in near real time, including tiers and partners you do not directly control.
In Practice
Visibility spans several layers: transactional visibility (where is my purchase order or container right now), inventory visibility (what stock exists at every node, including suppliers and 3PLs), and multi-tier visibility (which sub-suppliers feed my suppliers). Each layer requires data sharing agreements and system integration, which is why full visibility is rare and valuable.
For planners, visibility converts surprises into manageable exceptions. Knowing a container will arrive ten days late while it is still on the water lets you reprioritize production, air-freight a partial quantity, or warn customers, instead of discovering the gap at the receiving dock. Visibility is also the primary antidote to the bullwhip effect, since sharing true consumption data removes the distortion of echeloned ordering.
During the Suez Canal blockage in 2021, companies with shipment-level visibility identified affected purchase orders within hours; those without spent weeks reconciling spreadsheets while competitors rebooked capacity.
