Certified in Planning and Inventory Management (CPIM)

Definition

The CPIM is an ASCM certification focused on production planning, inventory management, scheduling, and internal supply chain operations. It is one of the most widely held credentials among planners and inventory professionals.

In Practice

The CPIM goes deep on the internal mechanics of a supply chain: sales and operations planning, master scheduling, material requirements planning, capacity management, and inventory control. Where the CSCP is broad, the CPIM is deep, making it the natural choice for demand planners, supply planners, production schedulers, and inventory analysts.

The certification has decades of history under the APICS brand, so it carries strong recognition with manufacturers, distributors, and retailers. Hiring managers often treat it as evidence that a candidate genuinely understands concepts like safety stock, reorder points, and lot sizing rather than just the vocabulary.

There are no formal experience prerequisites, which makes the CPIM accessible early in a career. The current format is a single exam, and most candidates prepare over three to five months. If your day-to-day work involves forecasts, stock levels, or production schedules, the CPIM is usually the highest-return certification you can pursue first.
