Definition
Prescriptive analytics goes beyond predicting outcomes to recommending or automating the best action, typically using optimization or simulation to weigh costs, constraints, and service goals.
In Practice
Where predictive analytics says 'this DC will stock out Thursday,' prescriptive analytics says 'transfer 400 units from Dallas tonight — it protects service at the lowest total cost.' Under the hood are optimization models (linear and mixed-integer programming) and simulation that evaluate thousands of feasible actions against objectives and constraints.
For practitioners, prescriptive tools shine in decisions with too many moving parts for intuition: multi-stop load building, inventory rebalancing across a network, or production sequencing. The planner's job shifts to validating the model's constraints and reviewing recommendations rather than constructing answers by hand.
Example: a TMS optimization engine ingests 600 orders and prescribes a load plan — which orders combine, which mode, which carrier, in what stop sequence — cutting freight spend 8 percent versus the manual plan while meeting every delivery window.
