Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS)
Definition
Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) software creates feasible, optimized production and supply plans by considering material availability, machine capacity, and demand priorities simultaneously — something basic MRP cannot do.
In Practice
Classic ERP-based MRP assumes infinite capacity and fixed lead times, which is why its plans often collapse on the shop floor. APS engines model finite capacity, changeover times, labor, and material constraints together, then sequence work to hit due dates at lowest cost.
For a planner, APS changes the daily question from 'what does the system say?' to 'which of these feasible scenarios do we choose?'. You can simulate pulling an order forward, see which other orders slip, and commit a schedule the plant can actually run.
Example: a food manufacturer uses an APS tool such as Kinaxis or OMP to sequence allergen-sensitive products so cleandowns are minimized, while still respecting shelf-life windows and promotional demand spikes — a schedule no spreadsheet could rebuild every morning.
