Gateway Work Center

A gateway work center is the first work center in a production routing — the point where a manufacturing order enters the shop floor and its raw material is first committed to the process.

Gateway work centers matter because they control what flows into the plant. Releasing an order at the gateway commits material and starts the work-in-process clock, so input/output control at the gateway is how planners regulate shop load: if downstream capacity is full, holding orders at the gateway prevents WIP from piling up in queues.

Schedulers also watch gateway centers because a delay there ripples through every downstream operation. In many plants the gateway doubles as the first count point for production reporting.

Why is the gateway work center important for shop floor control?

It is the valve that controls work entering the plant. By releasing orders at the gateway only as fast as downstream operations can absorb them, planners keep queues and work-in-process stable. Overloading the gateway just moves inventory from the stockroom onto the shop floor.

Is the gateway work center the same as the bottleneck?

No. The gateway is simply the first operation in the routing; the bottleneck is the resource with the least capacity, which can sit anywhere in the flow. Good practice paces gateway releases to the bottleneck's rate so the constraint is never starved and never buried.
