Bottleneck
Definition
A bottleneck is the resource or process step with the least capacity in a system, which limits the output of the whole chain. Total throughput can never exceed the bottleneck's rate.
In Practice
The theory of constraints, popularized by Goldratt's book The Goal, made the bottleneck the center of operations thinking: identify the constraint, exploit it fully, subordinate everything else to it, elevate its capacity, and repeat as the constraint moves. An hour lost at the bottleneck is an hour of output lost for the entire system, while an hour saved anywhere else is usually an illusion.
Practically, this changes daily priorities. The bottleneck machine should never starve for material or sit idle through a changeover; buffers belong in front of it, best operators on it, and quality checks before it so it never wastes time on defective parts. Improving non-bottleneck steps just builds queues.
Bottlenecks exist beyond factories: a single pasteurizer in a dairy, customs clearance in an import lane, or one approver in an order-release process can each cap end-to-end flow. Planners find them by looking for where queues persistently build and utilization runs near 100 percent.
