A carbon handprint is the positive climate impact a product or company creates by helping others avoid or reduce emissions — the beneficial mirror image of a carbon footprint, which measures the harm caused.

Where a footprint counts the emissions you cause, a handprint counts the emissions your offering removes from someone else's footprint. A lightweight packaging design that cuts a customer's freight emissions, routing software that eliminates empty miles, or an insulation product that saves heating energy all create handprints measured against the baseline the customer would otherwise have used.
The concept, formalized by researchers at VTT and LUT in Finland, gives supply chain teams a way to quantify green value creation rather than only harm reduction — useful in sustainability reporting and in selling low-carbon logistics services. A credible handprint claim requires a defensible baseline and cannot be netted against the provider's own footprint.
