Definition

A carbon footprint is the total greenhouse gas emissions caused by a product, shipment, company, or supply chain, expressed in tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) across direct operations and purchased energy, and often the full value chain.

Supply chains dominate most companies' footprints: scope 3 emissions — those from suppliers, transportation, product use, and disposal — typically dwarf a firm's own scope 1 and 2 totals, often by a factor of 5 to 10. That puts procurement and logistics at the center of decarbonization work.

Mode choice is a powerful lever: moving a tonne of freight by air emits roughly 20–30 times more CO2e per tonne-km than ocean, and truck several times more than rail. Planners reduce footprint through modal shift, better cube utilization, consolidated shipments, nearshoring, and supplier energy programs — and calculate it using frameworks such as the GHG Protocol and GLEC for freight.

Scope 1 is direct emissions from assets the company owns, like its trucks and boilers. Scope 2 is emissions from purchased electricity and heat. Scope 3 is everything else in the value chain — supplier production, purchased transportation, distribution, product use, and end-of-life — and usually represents the large majority.
