Six Sigma

Definition

Six Sigma is a data-driven methodology for reducing defects and variation in processes, using statistical tools and the DMAIC improvement cycle. In supply chain, it is applied to problems like forecast error, order accuracy, and lead time variability.

In Practice

Six Sigma originated at Motorola in the 1980s and was popularized by General Electric. Its core idea is that process variation causes defects, and that measuring, analyzing, and controlling variation systematically produces dramatic quality and cost improvements. The DMAIC cycle (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) provides the standard project roadmap.

Supply chains are full of variation: supplier lead times fluctuate, forecasts miss, picking errors occur. Six Sigma gives professionals a rigorous toolkit, from process mapping and root cause analysis to statistical process control and hypothesis testing, for attacking these problems with data rather than opinion.

For career purposes, Six Sigma training is delivered through the belt system, and a Green Belt is a common differentiator for analysts and planners. Employers value it because certified practitioners can lead structured improvement projects with measurable savings. Pair it with Lean thinking, since most organizations now blend the two as Lean Six Sigma.
