Demand planning software generates statistical forecasts of future demand and gives planners a workspace to review, adjust, and agree on them with sales and finance.
In Practice
The software ingests sales history, cleanses it for outliers and stockout distortions, fits statistical or machine learning models per item-location, and produces a baseline forecast. Planners then layer on promotions, new product launches, and market intelligence through structured overrides.
Day to day, this is where forecast accuracy is won or lost. Good tools show forecast value added — whether each human override actually beat the statistical baseline — so planners learn where to intervene and where to leave the model alone. The consensus forecast feeds safety stock, replenishment, and S&OP.
Example: a beverage company uses demand planning software to forecast 5,000 SKU-DC combinations weekly; the system handles the stable 80 percent automatically while planners focus exception time on promoted items and volatile new flavors, cutting MAPE several points.
