Container Utilization

Definition

Container utilization measures how much of a container's available volume or weight capacity a shipment actually uses, usually expressed as a percentage. Higher utilization means lower freight cost per unit shipped.

In Practice

Utilization is calculated against two ceilings: cube, the container's usable volume, and payload, its legal weight limit. Light, bulky cargo cubes out first; dense cargo weighs out first. Practical loading rarely achieves the theoretical cube because carton dimensions leave void space, so 85 to 90 percent volume utilization is often the realistic maximum for floor-loaded cartons, and lower for palletized freight.

Planners work utilization constantly because the container costs the same whether it is 60 percent or 95 percent full. Levers include carton design that fits container dimensions, mixing dense and light SKUs in one box, floor loading versus palletizing, and adjusting order quantities to hit full-container increments.

For example, an importer paying 4,000 dollars per 40-foot container who lifts utilization from 70 to 90 percent effectively cuts ocean freight per unit by more than a fifth, simply by ordering to container-fit quantities.
