Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMR)

Definition

Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) are self-navigating warehouse robots that use sensors and onboard intelligence to move goods around a facility, dynamically routing around people and obstacles without fixed guide paths.

In Practice

Unlike older automated guided vehicles (AGVs) that follow wires or magnetic tape, AMRs map the building and plan their own routes, so deployment needs no infrastructure changes. Common roles include goods-to-person shelf carriers, collaborative picking robots that meet workers in aisles, and pallet movers shuttling between zones.

The practical appeal is flexibility and speed to value: a fleet can be piloted in weeks, scaled for peak by renting more units (robots-as-a-service), and re-tasked when processes change — a sharp contrast with bolted-down conveyor. Fleet software integrates with the WMS, which assigns tasks and orchestrates robot-human handoffs.

Example: a 3PL adds 40 collaborative AMRs for peak season; pickers stay in zones while robots carry orders between them and to packing, lifting pick rates about 60 percent, then half the fleet is returned in January.
