Cost per Box = Carrier Rate + Packaging + Pick & Pack · Monthly Spend = Cost per Box × Subscribers × Boxes per Month · Billable Weight = max(Actual, L×W×H ÷ 139)Carriers bill parcels on the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight (length × width × height in inches divided by the DIM divisor, 139 for major US parcel carriers). Scenario: A snack-box company ships to 2,500 subscribers monthly: - Box: 12" × 9" × 4", packed weight 2.1 lb - Carrier rate: $8.90/box · Packaging + pick-pack: $2.35/box - Subscription price: $34.99/month Calculation: Dim weight = (12 × 9 × 4) ÷ 139 = 3.1 lb → billable weight 3.1 lb (dim > actual) Cost per box = $8.90 + $2.35 = $11.25 Monthly spend = $11.25 × 2,500 = $28,125 Shipping + fulfillment = $11.25 ÷ $34.99 = 32.2% of the subscription price At 32% the box economics are strained — a smaller 11" × 8" × 3" carton drops dim weight to 1.9 lb, moving the box into a cheaper rate tier.
How to Interpret Your Result
• Healthy subscription boxes typically keep shipping + fulfillment at 15–25% of the subscription price; above 30%, margins depend entirely on churn staying low. • If billable weight is driven by dimensions rather than actual weight, shrinking the carton is usually the fastest cost lever — every cubic inch is billed. • Volume matters: at a few thousand boxes per month you qualify for negotiated parcel rates; re-quote carriers at each volume milestone. • Batch-and-ship windows (shipping all boxes in one weekly wave) cut pick-pack cost per box versus continuous fulfillment.
